Food Shop Signage

The value of food shop, grocery store and supermarket signage
In a study conducted by the University of San Diego, results indicated that the number of signs and signage used at a particular site can have a significant and positive impact on the annual sales revenues of a business.
It is often said that good signage can mark the difference between the success and failure of a business. In the retail industry, success depends on how well signage is able to influence and affect the spending habits of a buyer.

Why use signage?

Some of the methods used to increase a client's spending habits, especially in food shops, grocery stores and supermarkets, are to introduce specials, to announce big sales and to promote new products. Signage is used to alert customers as to which products are fresh, exciting and available at a bargain. A sign that is concise, visible, legible and appealing can attract new customers and appeal to whims of regulars.

Types of signage

A retail shop owner knows that signage is the first – and one of the best – opportunities to communicate with customers. Every conscious shop-owner knows that the well-considered use of signage can inspire “impulse buying” from customers. A notification of a special price and a new product can prompt an unplanned stop, which can result in a profitable return for a business.
For this reason, the type of signage used in shops can vary from temporary and changeable window signs to draw people passing by, to signage tools such as kiosks, brochure-holders and ceiling danglers which retain the interest of the customers once they are inside a specific shop.

Exterior & interior

While exterior signage can give a small business an edge over its competitors, interior signage can give a customer the benefit of choice, interest and ease. Directional signage or menu signage can guide a shopper to different aisles of a shop where products on special are available. Way-finding signage can direct the customer to different sections of the shop. Informational signage will lead a customer to common public areas like the bathroom, till point, customer service counter or an executive office, should they need to go there.

Every centimetre of a shop is valuable marketing space. For instance, colourful, highly durable floor signs can point a customer in the direction of a product that is being promoted or to any service that is on hand.

Evolution is possible

As shops become larger and more complex, the demand for signage increases. With adequate signage something that began as a food store, grocery store or supermarket can start to feel like a superior hypermarket, where customers can get the information and value they have come to expect. Signage speaks for itself and the sales returns for a business using appropriate and enticing signage are there to prove it.
