BAUHAUS' INFLUENCE ON SIGNAGE
When Walter Gropius founded the Bauhaus in 1919 in Weimar, Germany, he expressed his purpose in the manifesto and programme of Weimar Bauhaus.
The school aimed to end the isolation of the arts in one form or another. It also looked to train craftsmen and artists in cooperative projects and workshops, rather than in studios. This became the main vehicle for exchange and learning programmes at the school.
Thousands attend Bauhaus exhibition
The ultimate aim of all creative activities is for the creativity to manifest. A full-scale exhibition of Bauhaus works took place in 1923. The exhibition was held in conjunction with other activities and successfully attracted over 15 000 people. However, the international success of the exhibition and the attention given the signs on show prompted ministers of education to look into Bauhaus' financials.
New premises for art school
The school nonetheless pressed on with its agenda, accessing further
funding in 1926 and moving to Dessau into a brand new building designed
by Walter Gropius. The furnishings were by other Bauhaus masters such
as Marcel Breuer. Most prominent amongst them was La Corbusier, who made
the world aware of the new style.
Illumination and the giant light cube
Famous designers in those times developed the giant light cube, radiating dazzling white light from every wall. The high glass walls openly revealed the light steel structure in all its transparencies from the iron grid through to the exterior structure. These were the early indications that illumination would one day play a huge role in aesthetics, as we see today.
The influence of Bauhaus on sign and design
Sign designers need to spend time studying the whole Bauhaus experience. Famous designers came from the school of Bauhaus with simplistic design, open spaces, lots of glass, unusual structures, Lego-style buildings, and exotic architecture for museums.
